Colombus Isle, the country of sirens and Christophe Colomb
by Martine Montémont
If it's indeed a Club Med which looks like, but then in no way, the idea that one is made the Bahama Islands, the tax haven for American billionaires, it's indeed that of Colombus Isle. On this island which counts hardly more than thousand inhabitants, the nature is wild and magnificent. It's the paradise of the dive, and it's there that Christophe Colomb landed by believing to arrive to India.
Direct flight from Paris
It was really the event for the inhabitants of Colombus Isle, one of 700 islands of the Archipelago of the Bahama Islands. Not only, the Méd club installed for 10 years on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christophe Colomb, has just reopened after one year of lock, but it's a big bearer, an Airbus A 330 of the charter Company Star Air Lines who arises on the small airport for the first time. It comes directly from Paris and it's its inaugural flight. Before, it was necessary to make stopover in Miami and even to spend the night there. Then, one took a smaller maximum plane of 50 places.
The custom formalities were strangely simplified and are practically made totally in Paris at first. So much the better for GO who welcome them, it is always very stimulating to fill up in a village. Especially if it is far from everything.
This one was completely renewed and chambers, distributed in bungalow are spacious and obviously air-conditioned. The vegetation, however luxuriant it is, isn't caricatural for all that. Nothing to do with the quite made idea that one is made holidays under Tropics. Here, one's the peace, GO are kind, the kitchen is good and the plentiful dishes. One likes the fresh brioche in the white chocolate, the roasted mahi-mahi (it's a sea bream), varied breads and even foie gras in apples fruit.
Incomparable, as they say!
It's in 300 metres of the village as the crow flies that Christophe Colomb put the foot on an American ground for the first time. It's not rare that both boats of dive of the Club approach in some metres of the beach indicated by a cross planted on the occasion of 500 years by the discovery of the island. The GM can then go to it in some breaststroke. Over there, no parasols, of mattress, bar, shop and "tonitruante" music under coconut palms. The beach is net as the hand, the fine sand, the quasi-deserted place under the rough setting sun of Tropics. Total emotion! It's not difficult to assert that Colombus Isle and the Bahama Islands generally, situated well in the door of the American continent, saw disentangling many travelers. Before the GM of the Club Méd, there were sailors, storekeepers, any sorts of adventurers. The reception was warm, and it stayed. All left presents, for many details of antiques which appear in the common rooms of the village, transformed into museum.
A paradise for the dive and the free-diving
Good blood wouldn't know how to lie, the father of Luc Besson was a village headman, it's thus to the Club Méd that the film-maker discovered the sea, the dive and the sports of water. All the family kept some taste for the depthes and certain sense of the spectacle. So, in the Big Blue, it's the father the director himself who plays the role of that of the Jacques Mayol and his own small brother who interprets that of the champion of dive when he was a child.
When the film was born the record of free-diving became established around 120 metres. It exceeds 160 metres today. It's French Loïc Leferme which beat it at the end of November, 2002. It was held to there by Tanya Streeter, magnificent and quite slim one texan siren which had tempted it, and made a success, in waters of the Turkoise Club Mé. The buckle is buckled.
Tanya, her long red hair and equipped with her unique palm which allows her to look like even more the heroine of Andersen's tale proceeded to a demonstration off Colombus Isle, there where the littoral platform dives brutally from 15 metres to 2000 metres. Turquoise blue waters become suddenly black and the divers, with where without bottles enter in the field of ocean deeps.
Around Tanya and around Umberto Pelizzari ex-champion of the world of free-diving amateurs, surprised and delighted to meet a hammerhead shark, to follow a tortoise swimming between two waters, to admire the champion caressing a baby dolphin accompanied with his mother and who stopped one moment to play with the diver.
The material is exceptional, the magnificent boats, GO specialized very enthusiastic and particularly convincing. I who never take away me from the edge of the beach and am not really a fan of water sports strictly speaking, I'd difficulty resisting to them so much they showed of conviction to be made discover their universe to the put under stress city-dwellers that we were even some hours previously. Two days more to Colombus-Isle and, sworn-in, the same I, I plunged!
Some good news from here and there
The Club Med is fine, thank you very much, and always represents, with the eyes of many, something really exceptional (our faithful Internet users approve by a large majority regularly the pages which are dedicated to him on "French Tourism Mag-e-zine"), even if of numerous colleagues journalists don't hesitate to compare it with other, more and more numerous on the market, which occupy the same crenel and are some time twice cheaper.
A recent survey brings the proof that the GM are really satisfied because 86 % of them intend to return to the Club having made for it a recent stay.
The notion of village around a central place is one of the Must of the Club and one of the secrets of its success. Also, that of space in often unique places is major (the smallest extends over 25 hectares and the biggest, that of Vittel over 600 hectares).
Why to go there?
Because the prices are sweet and because the flight (express) isn't tiring.
That the temperature of the sea and the temperature of the air turn both around 30 degrees. That the place is wild, very protected and loaded with emotion (Christophe Colomb). Because it's a club where one is less and where the plunged activity is very well supervised, the perfect material.
And in spite of what?
Though there's nothing else to make and it's necessary to like at all costs the beach, the bathing, the sea, the sea and still the sea.
That, crossed 10 years, the children risk to miss, unless the other young passionate persons of dive meet themselves there at the same time as they. But that one is sure of nothing and that there's no care, neither for the children, nor for the Teens...
